Job Summary:

To lead and manage the company’s public relations, brand positioning, stakeholder communication and marketing initiatives in support of business growth, service delivery, regulatory credibility and community trust within the waste management sector. The role is accountable for developing and executing communication and marketing strategies that strengthen corporate reputation, support contract retention and acquisition, promote customer awareness, and ensure consistent messaging across internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic communications and brand management:

 Develop and implement an integrated public relations and marketing strategy aligned to the company’s business plan, customer value proposition and accountability matrix. Ensure clear ownership of corporate messaging, campaigns, stakeholder communication and brand standards across all divisions and operating sites.

Stakeholder engagement:

Build and maintain productive relationships with municipalities, regulators, communities, customers, media, industry bodies and strategic partners. Support communication that strengthens confidence in the company’s service delivery, compliance position, environmental stewardship and responsiveness.

Customer and public information management:

Lead customer-facing communication relating to waste collection schedules, service changes, recycling campaigns, complaints trends, disruptions, new contracts, community awareness programmes and operational notices. Ensure messaging is timely, accurate, audience-appropriate and coordinated with operations.

Media relations and reputation management:

Serve as the custodian of media engagement, press statements, interviews, thought leadership content and reputation monitoring. Manage media enquiries professionally and ensure escalation of sensitive matters in line with the accountability matrix and executive approval protocols.

Crisis and incident communication:

Develop and maintain communication protocols for incidents, service disruptions, environmental complaints, community unrest, safety-related matters and reputational risks. Coordinate approved communication responses with operations, SHEQ, legal and executive leadership to protect trust and business continuity.

Commercial support and tender positioning:

Support business development through high-quality company profiles, bid/tender content, case studies, presentation material, campaign messaging and market-facing collateral that clearly communicates service capability, compliance strength and sustainability impact.

Digital marketing and content governance:

Oversee digital channels, website content, social media platforms and campaign calendars to ensure relevance, consistency, compliance and brand integrity. Monitor engagement trends and use data to refine communication and marketing effectiveness.

Community and sustainability communication:

Promote the company’s environmental, recycling, ESG and community-impact initiatives through targeted campaigns and stakeholder engagement. Translate technical waste management and sustainability initiatives into clear public messaging that supports awareness and participation.

Budget and supplier management:

Prepare and manage the marketing and communications budget, monitor return on spend, and manage external agencies, designers, printers, event suppliers and media partners in accordance with procurement and approval requirements.

Internal collaboration and accountability alignment:

Work cross-functionally with operations, fleet, SHEQ, finance, HR, legal and commercial teams to ensure communication responsibilities are clearly assigned, approved and executed in line with the accountability matrix. Clarify who is responsible, accountable, consulted and informed for key communication and brand activities.

Governance, reporting and continuous improvement:

Track communication and marketing performance, prepare monthly and quarterly reports, identify reputational or stakeholder risks, and recommend improvements based on data, market trends and business priorities.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

•Approved annual communications and marketing plan delivered and executed within agreed timelines and budget.

•Monthly customer and public communication calendar implemented with timely updates on service changes, campaigns and operational notices.

•Turnaround times for media responses, stakeholder communication and escalation protocols achieved in line with approved standards.

•Growth in brand visibility, stakeholder engagement and digital reach measured through agreed monthly and quarterly performance metrics.

•Communication support provided for tenders, proposals and commercial presentations within required deadlines and quality standards.

•Quarterly performance reports submitted with insights, risks, corrective actions and recommendations for improvement.

•Positive and consistent corporate image maintained across media, digital and stakeholder platforms.

•Successful delivery of community awareness, recycling and stakeholder engagement campaigns that support the company’s operating model.

•Minimal reputational risk exposure through effective incident communication, message control and approved escalation processes.

•All content; campaigns and external communication aligned to brand standards, legal requirements and internal approval authorities.

•Effective collaboration across departments with clear accountability for communication deliverables in line with the accountability matrix.

Requirements:

1. Education

    – Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Business Administration, Media Studies or a related field.

    – A master’s degree or professional qualification in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Strategic Communication or Business Management is an added advantage.

2. Experience

    – Minimum 5 years of experience in public relations, corporate communications, marketing, brand management or stakeholder engagement, preferably within waste management, environmental services, infrastructure, utilities or a service-based industry.

    – Proven track record in developing and executing communication campaigns, managing media relations, coordinating stakeholder engagement and supporting brand visibility or business development initiatives.

3. Certifications

    – Professional certification or membership in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, Digital Marketing or Brand Management is an added advantage.

4. Skills

    – Excellent written and verbal communication, media relations, presentation, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.

    – Strong knowledge of brand management, campaign planning, digital marketing, social media management, content development and corporate reputation management.

    – Ability to prepare press releases, speeches, reports, proposals, company profiles, marketing collateral and crisis communication materials with accuracy and professionalism.
