Mutare City Council top officials – the Mayor Councillor Simon Chabuka and Town Clerk Blessingf Chafesuka were charmed by our project in Harare, and they are eager to replicate a sustainable waste management system in their city.
Clr Chabuka and Chafesuka toured our waste management facility – the first such in the SADC region on Tuesday.
The Mutare Mayor said he was unaware of the magnitude of our project but his team was keen to learn from our initiative.
Clr Chabuka said: “We have seen and learned a lot. Honestly, we were initially unaware of the massive project here. Now, as we return to Mutare, we will convene to discuss how we can create something sustainable, similar to what we have witnessed at Geo Pomona.”

Chafesuka chipped in, saying it was crucial to establish partnerships between councils and private companies with adequate expertise in waste management systems.
“While the City of Mutare may not have the capacity to undertake such a project independently, we can explore structuring a partnership, in accordance with the procedures outlined by the central Government,” said Chafesuka.

Geo Pomona Waste Management Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya noted that the company was prepared to partner local authorities to provide sustainable waste management solutions.
“We are eager to collaborate with local authorities to provide effective waste management solutions. I’m pleased that they have visited us, as this first-hand experience will demonstrate our approach to manage waste. In fact, they are not the first to do so; the City of Bulawayo also paid us a visit,” said Dr Nguwaya.
“Notably, we have been entrusted with the responsibility of conducting waste collection in Harare. We have already procured the necessary equipment, which is currently being shipped. By the end of February, all equipment is expected to arrive, and the President (Dr E.D Mnangagwa) is scheduled to launch the initiative.”
