A high-level delegation from the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa has hailed Geo Pomona Waste Management as a model for sustainable waste management across the continent following a benchmarking tour in Harare.

The visit brought together representatives from Morocco, Malawi, Namibia and South Africa, who toured the waste-to-energy facility as part of regional municipal engagements.

Delegates described the project as a landmark development demonstrating that Africa can overcome long-standing waste management challenges through innovation, investment and strong public-private partnerships.

During the tour, officials were taken through the facility’s engineered landfill systems, environmental protection measures and waste-to-energy processes.

Members of the delegation praised the technology being deployed, noting it ranks among the most advanced on the continent.

Officials said while waste management has been a generational challenge for African cities, projects such as Geo Pomona prove that sustainable, environmentally responsible solutions are achievable.

They emphasized the need for African municipalities to collaborate, tailor and replicate similar models in their respective countries to modernise urban waste systems and improve environmental standards.

The benchmarking tour positions Geo Pomona as a growing continental reference point in integrated waste management, with visiting municipalities expressing interest in adapting the model to suit local conditions across Africa.
