Our Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr Dilesh Nguwaya has said the company is deeply honoured to be given the responsibility of collecting waste in Harare and will ensure that the capital is restored to its Sunshine City status.

Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, Dr Nguwaya said waste management has been a persistent challenge for the nation and the expectation was understandably high for our company to deliver.

“As Geo Pomona Waste Management Pvt Ltd, we are committed to putting our best foot forward to ensure we deliver on this mandate. We aim to clear illegal dumpsites across the city and we want Harare to become the Sunshine City again. A clean city will improve public health and the environment,” he said

Dr Nguwaya noted that our efforts will focus on high traffic areas such as the Central Business District (CBD), Mbare, bus termini, shopping centres and major roads.

He added that the waste collection service will be officially launched to ensure the public was well informed.

“Geo Pomona Waste Management has already demonstrated its capability and commitment by transforming the dumpsite into a state-of-the-art waste management facility which has gained regional recognition,” said Dr Nguwaya.

“With this proven track record, we are confident that we can similarly transform Harare into a clean and orderly city. We want to assure the public that we are here to work and our goal is always to strive for excellency in everything we do. The money that has been paid for waste collection will not go in vain.

“Together we can achieve a cleaner and more vibrant city.”

Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume said waste management was declared a State of Disaster and the local authority and Government implemented Chenesa One and Two.

He said: “We entered into a partnership with Geo Pomona to manage the dumpsite but there was an error that they were waiting for the waste to come to the site. But we wrote to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works that Geo Pomona should also do the solid waste management especially as we are getting into the rainy season.”

“As they manage the dumpsite, they must collect the solid waste so that it brings the deal into full circle as the deal.”

Cllr Mafume said the new deal marked the beginning of the new era in the management of waste in Harare.

The Mayor said he was impressed by the transformation that has taken place at the then Pomona dumpsite.

“We have a stark reality that waste is accumulating in the residential areas, and that must be removed. We look forward to working together with Geo Pomona for the next five years,” said Cllr Mafume.

“The City of Harare is being assisted by the Government to pay the bill and I think this is a win-win situation.”
