The Local Government and Public Works Minister Honourable Daniel Garwe has announced that Geo Pomona Waste Management Private Limited has been granted the green-light to partner with the City of Harare in solid waste management in the capital.
Minister Garwe addressed a Press conference on Monday, and he was flanked by Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume and our Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr Dilesh Nguwaya.
His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa in October 2023, declared a State of Disaster on solid waste management in Harare.
“This was as a result of the financial challenges which the City is experiencing and these challenges have acutely affected service delivery, particularly in water, sanitation, and solid waste management. In August 2024, the City wrote to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works appealing for intervention in the area of solid waste management,” said Minister Garwe.
He said our company submitted an Expression of Interest to the Local Government and Public Works Ministry and City of Harare for refuse collection and waste management.
The Minister said our company has an existing partnership with the City of Harare on a waste to energy project in Pomona.
“Government, through private sector participation, is therefore, confident that our Sunshine City will witness an immediate improvement in solid waste management going forward,” said Minister Garwe.
He added that to manage the solid waste problem, the Government intervened through Chenesa Harare Phase 2 while it was exploring ways of partnering with the private sector.
Geo Pomona Waste Management Private Limited has transformed the Pomona dumpsite into an enviable waste management facility, which has attracted interests of regional leaders from SADC and beyond.
