The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Public Accounts (PAC) toured our site on Friday and was quite impressed by our works at the site.
The committee chair Charlton Hwende was mesmerised by the great transformation at our Pomona site, saying back then people were forced to wear masks when entering the dumpsite but now the story has changed for the better.
Hwende said: “Generally, as PAC, we are impressed with the work that we are seeing here (at Geo Pomona Waste Management Private Limited). The last time that we were here, we couldn’t move around without masks. You can see that the place is clean.”
He added that: “There is a lot of work going on; there are some positive developments in regards with progress on the facilities that Geo Pomona promised to the City of Harare.”
Hwende was also optimistic that the set deadlines will be met.
“We think, judging from the developments that we have seen here, they will be able to meet their deadline in the five years that they have agreed with the City of Harare,” he said.
Geo Pomona Waste Management Private Limited Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr Dilesh Nguwaya said the company was driving good waste management systems in line with sustainable development goals (SDGs).
He also assured the Parliamentary committee that the company was well ahead of the set timelines to complete the project.
Dr Nguwaya said: “We are ahead of the schedule of timelines which we gave to the City of Harare. So what is left now is to construct the waste to energy plant. Everything, according to the agreement, was aligned and we are on course.”
Harare mayor Jacob Mafume promised to deliver the waste to the Pomona site for electricity generation.
Once complete, our waste to energy plant will generate 16-22MW of electricity which will be fed into the national grid.
Mafume said there was need to come up with an arrangement on how to transfer waste from the rest of Harare to our site.
“There is a lot of litter that is in the neighbourhood which should not be there. Also there are surrounding towns like Ruwa, Norton, Goromonzi and other developments that are around Epworth which should and must utilise this area and to give the requisite waste that is needed,” said Mafume.
