First Ladies from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries have expressed immense appreciation of the incredible work being done at our site to promote a cleaner planet and create a sustainable environment. 

The First Ladies, who attended the Southern Africa First ladies Forum on Environment hosted at our Pomona site on Saturday, said they were impressed by the innovative ways of waste management. 

Some of the First Ladies include Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, Inkhosikati LaMashwama of Eswatini, Angola’s Ana Afonso Dias Lourenço, Monica Chakwera of Malawi and Rose Margret Morel of Seychelles. 

Head of UN Environment Programme Southern African Sub-Regional Office Dr Meseret Teklemariam Zemedkun, was also part of the tour, which was led by our Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman Dr Dilesh Nguwaya who showed the First Ladies how the project has progressed so far. 

Inkosikati LaMashwama said: “It is an honour to stand before you and embark on a tour of this prestigious waste management facility. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Her Excellency Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa, our Environmental Patron, for championing good waste management practices.”

She noted that women played a critical role in environment stewardship, and it was  important to empower women to take leadership roles in environmental issues where their unique perspectives can be utilised to drive sustainable solutions. 

“I would like to recognise with immense appreciation the incredible work being done here in service of this community to protect the environment,” said Inkosikati LaMashwama. 

She said effective waste management was key in creating a sustainable environment for future generations. 

“We are witnessing how innovation and dedication can transform waste into valuable resource. We are happy to witness the tour today. The tour is important because it provides a platform where we can share strategies, mobilise resources and strengthen regional cooperation to protect our environment and secure sustainable future for us all.”

First Lady Ana Afonso Dias Lourenço said it was critical for high-level collaboration in waste management and promote a safe environment. 

Her Excellency Monica Chakwera said she learnt a lot in environment and good waste management. 

“I am committing myself to work with Dr Mnangagwa in tackling environmental issues. We will use this platform to advocate for policies that promote environmental sustainability. Together we can create a future where we can treasure our environment,” she said. 

 The First Ladies also took an opportunity to plant trees at our Pomona site as part of efforts to promote the environment and create a sustainable future.
