One of the core facilities of our waste management system – the sorting plant – is fast taking shape as workers are busy with construction of the plant’s various components at our Pomona site.

The main structure has since been erected and now, workers are busy laying the basement slab for the sorting plant.

Construction is currently underway on the sorting platforms and loading pits.

With the sorting plant taking shape, this facility is set to greatly transform and revolutionise waste management by enhancing the efficiency of waste separation right at our site.

Once completed, the sorting plant will be receiving mixed waste from collectors and get into the plant where it is segregated.

Then all the recyclable materials such as plastics, bottles, cans, and metals will be removed.

The recyclable materials will be taken to recycling companies for transformation to new products.

Some waste which is non-recyclable but combustible will then be diverted to the waste-to-energy plant, which is incinerated to generate electricity.

As part of the waste management, some of the leftover organic waste and unusable materials will be diverted to a waste landfill.

Our immense work at the Pomona site is steadily paying off and producing an epitome of good waste management in Zimbabwe, and Southern Africa.

Quite a number of dignitaries have toured our site and were amazed by the speed at which we are undertaking the project.

This has become a good example of successful projects implemented by the private sector to improve environmental management and clean renewable energy generation in Zimbabwe.

Also, this facility has changed dramatically – from an eyesore and health hazard into a well-managed and environmental friendly place.

Once in full swing, the project will be incinerating 1,000 tonnes of solid waste per day to produce 16MW–22MW of electricity. The power will be fed into the national grid to benefit communities.
