Our FIFA-certified soccer pitch in Pomona hosted the first game on Saturday afternoon pitting Caps United juniors and FC Porto Zimbabwe Academy with some big soccer names in the country attending the match.
The soccer field was built at our waste-to-energy plant site as a way of our corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Geo Pomona Waste Management Pvt Ltd CEO and Executive Chairman Dr Dilesh Nguwaya welcomed the teams to the soccer pitch.
He said he was looking forward to hosting more local and international soccer teams.
“This is the first match to be played at these facilities. So, this means teams will come and play at these facilities. This is giving back to the community, it’s our corporate social responsibility. We expect other teams, locally or internationally, to come in the future,” said Dr Nguwaya.
Former Zimbabwe national soccer team coach Sunday Chidzambwa and Caps United coach Lloyd Chitembwe also watched the first game on our soccer pitch.
During the exciting game, FC Porto Zimbabwe Academy showed great talent and grabbed a 7-1 victory against the Caps United development team.
Chidzambwa was impressed by our initiative to support sports in Zimbabwe.
“Some of them are very good and you can see that we have got excess talent in this country, if they get chances to go overseas, they will do very well. We’ve got very good youngsters in this country,” said Chidzambwa, who was recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by COSAFA.
Apart from the soccer field, there are also state-of-the-art basketball and tennis courts. Plans are underway for the construction of a restaurant as part of recreational facilities at the modern waste management site.
The former Pomona dumpsite is now squeaky clean and well-managed ever since we took over running the place from the City of Harare.
