Geo Pomona Waste Management Pvt Ltd chief executive officer and executive chairman Dr Dilesh Nguwaya has been honoured by the International Institute of Philanthropy (IIP) with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters (DHL) for positively impacting humanity in Zimbabwe.
Speaking after the ceremony in Harare, Dr Nguwaya said he deserved the honour considering the great works of transforming the once smelly dumpsite in Pomona to a state-of-the-art facility that will be producing electricity to feed the national grid.
IPP country representative Dr Enrico Maverick conferred the Honorary Doctorate.
Dr Nguwaya said the company has successfully built a FIFA-certified soccer pitch, basketball, and tennis courts to benefit the community.
Just this week, Dr Nguwaya said, the company paid school fees for a less privileged Highfield High School girl and assisted many other orphans.
“I deserve this honour because we worked hard at the Pomona dumpsite transforming it from a hazardous place to what it is today. When Geo Pomona took over from the City of Harare, we transformed the place into a liveable facility where everyone can come and dine,” he said.
“There is no longer a stench and flies which was a health hazard to the Pomona residents.”
“We are giving back to the community by building sports facilities as part of our corporate social responsibility. Who would think a dumpsite could be changed to provide such international facilities standards? We are hardworking and resilient to make life easier for the community.”
As part of the philanthropic works, Dr Nguwaya added that his company recently repainted Malborough Police Station and fixed Sawley Way in Malborough.
