Sports, Arts, and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry has expressed gratitude to Geo Pomona Waste Management Pvt Ltd for investing in state-of-the-art sports facilities such as a FIFA-certified soccer pitch, basketball, and tennis courts in Pomona.
The facilities will be open to the public.
Speaking after touring the recreational infrastructure at the Geo Pomona site on Monday afternoon, Minister Coventry said the government valued private players who were coming on board in community development.
“We can’t do anything without them; the government is trying to stretch the budget as much as possible, but we need the private players. We are thankful for private companies such as Geo Pomona Waste Management Pvt Ltd for leading the way in doing community development,” said Minister Coventry.
“We now have facilities open to the public; I want to say a big thank you from my Ministry (of Sports) to Geo Pomona Waste Management Pvt Ltd because we can’t do everything by ourselves. I am excited that in the space of three months, we have seen the private sector playing a key role in supporting sports.”
The Minister was charmed by the great transformation that has taken place in a few months at the once smelly dumpsite now a well-maintained facility.
She said: “To think that once this was a massive dumpsite and to hear all the information and the work that has gone into the cleaning, the clearing and the revamping and now to be standing on an astroturf that is a high standard, internationally recognised, is incredible and I want to thank Geo Pomona and the team for giving back into sport and recreation.”
Geo Pomona Waste Management Pvt Ltd Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman Mr Dilesh Nguwaya said plans were at an advanced stage for constructing terraces, changing rooms, and a restaurant at the facility.
“The important thing is that our national team will come and train here when they play against other teams that use this kind of turf. The other facilities to be added here include a restaurant, stands, and changing rooms,” said Mr Nguwaya.
