These facilities have turned the once-dreaded Pomona dumpsite into a community hub where residents can enjoy outdoor activities.

The FIFA certification ceremony held in February was graced by Deputy Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Emily Jesaya. The event symbolised a new chapter for the site, showcasing our commitment to creating an aesthetically pleasing and functional environment for the public.

Concrete Batch Plant

After carefully evaluating the costs associated with concrete per cubic meter, we made the strategic decision to construct our own batch plant due to its economic feasibility. As a result, we have successfully completed the construction of a 60 cubic meter per hour batch plant to support the concrete requirements of our Waste-to-Energy plant and all other civil works on site, which require concrete.

Hazardous Waste Landfills

A major milestone was the construction of Harare’s only licensed hazardous waste landfills, certified by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA). When hazardous waste is not disposed of properly, it can be harmful to human health and unsafe for the environment. If mishandled, it can seep into the ground and pollute the water we drink or the soil we use — or even disperse into the air we breathe. Therefore, these landfills are designed to safely manage hazardous materials like used oils, pesticides, and expired medicines, preventing contamination of our air, soil, and water.

Water Ponds and Wastewater Treatment

Our water ponds, completed this year, form a critical part of our leachate management system. Landfill leachate from municipal solid waste landfills is a major environmental concern and a worldwide problem because of its heavy contamination and treatment complexity of such wastewater.

In fact, the leachate wastewater produced from landfills can migrate to and contaminate the soil surface and groundwaters if not treated properly.

Leachate from the landfills is collected in a water pond, treated in our Wastewater Treatment Plant, and then deposited into a second pond as clean water. The treatment plant ensures that all discharged water meets EU environmental standards, with a 98-99% purification rate. The purified water will be used for irrigation and supporting our Waste-to-Energy operations.

Sorting Plant

Our sorting plant is nearing completion, with all equipment now on site. It is a crucial step in adhering to the principles of waste management hierarchy and our commitment to the “Zero-Waste to Landfill” policy. This facility will employ a comprehensive selection process for incoming waste, aligning with global waste management directives.

Our sorting plant is designed to separate bulky materials and recyclable fractions from the incoming waste stream. It’s imperative to adhere to this hierarchy as we aim to avoid incinerating recyclable materials, which is not considered best practice. Additionally, the plant will strategically select and generate waste with optimum calorific power for our Waste to Energy Plant.

Our sorting plant is nearing completion, with all equipment now on site.
